Young people of our group are forgetting the past of their people, just as those young people in Jewish history forgot the God of their fathers. It is only through reminders, like this occasion, that the story is kept before them and they are made to realize the blessed assurance that our path has a guide and our eyes a light.

Amidst the terrorism and mob violence breaking out over the land, we have just witnessed in Loudon County, Virginia the evidence of the majesty of the law and the power of guarantees written into the Constitution of our country in blood and sacrifice. Due process of law was shown to one who was marked in his color as belonging to that group coming last into full citizenship. Except the selection of the jury, his racial origin did not once enter into the proceedings in the defense of his life. Virginia has traveled far since 1619, when it made members of that same group into slaves with no rights, and held them so until forced to recognize their freedom, by defeat at armed rebellion after 250 years. It is deplorable when the demands of the present hour crowd out those records of a people’s past…As our young people have forgotten and neglected that past, they also have lost that spiritual touch and reverence in the rendition of the spiritual songs which are their heritage.40
